When I was a little girl, I went to Camp Miramichee with my best friend, Ellyn who had been to camp the year before. It was for two weeks and we had a great time, learning to canoe, swim (in a river!) make things in crafts and just enjoying being with other girls in a fun environment that included campfires, outings, and learning about many things. Four years later, I was still at Miramichee in the summers, making new friends and enjoying being with old ones and all of us growing up together as teenagers. You see there was this “Camp up in the Ozarks that is very dear to me and no matter where I wander, that is where I want to be…Miramichee, Miramichee….
Fast forward about 40 years or so.. to around 2006 when Miramichee Campers started looking for each other and the friendships that we shared. My Mother was sick during this time so I was not able to attend the first Miramichee Camp Reunion but I heard all about it. In the Spring of 2007 at the Holiday Inn at Memphis State University Campus. a great gathering of friends and fellow campers from years ago gathered together, campers, counselors friends.. Old campers like myself and also a gathering of those who followed in our footsteps in the years after we had left Miramichee. We came from near and far, older and younger, camper, counselor, parents….
Our Miramichee Stories melded together. We laughed and we cried as we remembered knowing that all of us were better people for having been at Miramichee.
Soon after this luncheon, I purchased my first cabin, a three bedroom that was located near the entrance to Camp Miramichee. Even one of the gate posts were still standing. It was exciting to be on the campus again. About a year later give or take,I bought my second cabin, the two bedroom which was the Dining Hall Preparation area. And yet a few years later, I purchased Ophelia’s Cabin, a one bedroom unit.
I began renting the cabins out in 2009 first one, then two and then the last one….
Each season I am delighted to welcome others to come to my cabins at Miramichee, to rest, relax, and stay awhile. To have fun, explore the area, sample the food, canoe, kayak, fish, cook out, building their own stories of staying in the cabins at Miramichee where they make memories that will linger, in their hearts forever….
